Saturday, November 1:
DELILAH is an internationally acclaimed belly dance performer and instructor. She was the first dancer to receive the Dancer of the Year Award from the International Academy of Middle Eastern Dance in Hollywood, California.
DELILAH grew up in Southern California, learning the dance form as it was passed on and popularized in this country by first and second generation immigrants from Lebanon, Armenia, Iraq, Syria, Iran, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Morocco and Greece. Her years of devoted study and practice have led her to become one of the foremost teachers and innovators in the field of belly dance today. She is widely known for her breathtaking and inspiring performances.
SIROCCO is the duo Sulyman el Coyote and Armando Mafufo. Based in Santa Cruz California, SIROCCO has enjoyed playing Middle Eastern music for belly dancers across the United States, Canada and Hawaii since 1971. Their specialty is improvisation within the genre using traditional instruments.
SIROCCO has loyal fans that enjoy their ability to create an electrifying atmosphere that ignites audiences and belly-dancers alike.
Sulyman el Coyote is accomplished on several instruments and is a powerful vocalist. He plays masterful oud, diabolical violin, and is ethereal on the ney. What can we say about his expertise on saz, kanoon, mizmar, arghool, clarinet, and Flamenco guitar? He also handcrafts and sells the very best tuned zills and creates very unique silver jewelry.
Armando Mafufo, (Uncle Mafufo) is a melodic doumbek player. He is a master of shading and textures on the drum. He enjoys playing the traditional instruments like nakara, tabl beledi, and an assortment of Middle Eastern frame drums. Armando plays tabl beledi (the big drum) for a powerful tribal style performance with Sulyman on the mizmar. Uncle Mafufo has produced four CDs of his solo compositions in addition to his very popular series of Middle Eastern Rhythms/Technique videos for learning Doumbek, Riq and Def and a CD of 25 Essential Rhythms for every drummer/dancer.
Class Descriptions:
Bellyrolls, Undulations, and Coin Tricks - Here, we examine how to begin training and developing awareness in your belly, solar plexus and lungs. We learn rolls, rotations, undulations, body articulations and isolations, such as the belly flutter. Delilah calls it reptilinear locomotion! WE also work with traveling steps, like the camel walk, 98/8 undulations, and rising and falling undulations. We learn a dance called Cheftitelli Scat. And of course at last, but not least, Delilah famous coin flip trick! Bring a silver dollar if you have one.
Floor Work - This class focuses on the importance of level change and the beauty of gymnastics. We look at what makes floor work effective and how to avoid sore knees. We discuss the methods of Ågfloor work made easyÅh and examine the concepts and conditioning that lead to advanced floor work.
Veil Class - The dynamics of the veil dance are broken down and conceptualized. We then move on to a collection of veil techniques. A short choreographed dance entitled Lila assists us in mastering transitions from one movement to the next. We discuss styles, approaches and different sized veils and scarves. We work with Gypsy dancing to 9/8 rhythms with a veil. We learn a few veil wraps, and unwraps, as well as artful tucks and veil drapings. As an extended veil banquet, we learn DelilahÅfs famous Veil Therapy and veil plays, veil exchange, veil water wheel the Veil Oragamy Dance, and perhaps, if time allows, her Prayer to Ishtar dance.
The Art of Finger Cymbals; A Zil Workshop - Sol will demonstrate and teach how to approach the rhythms and styles of playing, including a gypsy style of playing two different toned zils. This is a class for dancers and for those who just want to learn to play zils with the band as a musician.
Drum Class - Whether you have never played or have some experience playing Middle Eastern rhythms you will enjoy this class. Dancers are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity! This is a MULTI-LEVEL class. It will be structured according to the needs of the participants. Armando will focus on technique and ensemble playing using traditional Middle Eastern rhythmic modes, the possibilities of rhythm as a focal point in music and how these rhythms can be applied to other forms of music.
Bring a percussion instrument of your choice, a notebook and learn to play the compelling rhythms that drew you to our dance. Instructional Videos and CDs will be available for sale.
BUY A DRUM for the workshop- FAST and EASY from Uncle Mafufo and recieve $5 off a CD!
