Roots of the Man
Academic achievement was a family priority. When one pokes around in their genealogy, one finds these kids came from very brainy, sturdy stock on both sides. Irish, English and Dutch. Steve’s Mom skipped a couple of grades without blinking, which made her a very young college graduate. She learned to speak fluent Spanish. His father was “Mr. Popular” in high school as class president, and a football quarterback star in Enderlin, North Dakota. Steve's great-grandfather on his dad’s side was a circuit judge until the age of 92 in South Dakota.

There were plenty of musicians in the gene pool too. His grandma Dora played the violin. All her family played something and his great uncle (also a circuit judge) Joseph Henry Bottum II worked his way through law school playing saxophone as well as sang and played piano. He wrote a popular song of his day called Dakota Girl. Learn more about Steve's great uncle at http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=B000656

Everyone seems to have good bones, good hair, good teeth. A fun-loving musical bunch that looks younger than average and lives long too. Steve seems to have inherited a quality of perpetual youthfulness and vitality in looks and attitude.

In junior high, Steve started his first band, but he didn’t play the piano. He played the drums (must have been the wall paper).

The band was called the “Serfs”. There were 5 guys and they played the popular stuff of the day, like “My Baby does the Hanky Panky” by Tommy James & The Shondells, “Wipe Out” by the The Surfaris and “Kicks” by Paul Revere and the Raiders . . .

Steve played drums in the school concert and marching bands. In 11th and 12 grades, Steve went away to a private high school in Saint Louis called Principia. There he joined a couple of bands that practiced in the school rec room, and played for the school dances. They played jazz, blues and rock. Some of their musical choices were not allowed by the conservative school board so he and his running buddies were a bit of a scandal in those days. He made some life long friends at Principia; Heather Elmer, Steve Parks and Daniel Thomson . . .

In college Steve wasn’t in a band but did return to playing an available piano he found in the dorm. He went to Syracuse University and studied photography and journalism. Steve started a business in Syracuse with the apt title of Photo Alchemy. In his third, year he took some time off to travel. He needed to think, explore who he was, and goof off for a while. He did yoga, became a vegetarian and drank Wild Turkey. It couldn’t have been more than a semester because he still managed to graduate on time Cum Laude with bachelors degrees in photography and journalism. This made his folks proud, but now that he was all done with school, his life was his own (remember, if you give a kid piano lessons you might end up with a musician in the family!).
