Decades of Love

I can’t quite remember the exact year of our meeting. I know that it was sometime in the mid 70’s. All of these years later, the details are a bit foggy too, but I will try to recall the event as best I can.

Pioneer Square in Seattle, Washington was the place to go in those days for good dancin’ music. A girlfriend and I decided to check out “The Square” and see if we could find a suitable band for the evening. We happened by a club and could hear some pretty rockin’ music spilling out onto the sidewalk. We had never been in this place, but we liked the name. It was called The Bombay Bicycle Shop. The band playing that night was called Shotgun. The band turned out to be great and lots of fun to dance to. We both took particular note of the extremely good looking piano player with those shoulders that rolled in time with every beat he played. Oh those shoulders! When the band finished playing we ended up chatting with some of the musicians, phone numbers got exchanged and we left the club - just the two of us girls. We got into our car, started it up and just as we were getting ready to pull out of our parking space those familiar shoulders materialized out of nowhere, leaned into the drivers side window and a voice said, “where are you girls headed now?” If I had to pinpoint a moment in time, I would have to say that those words turned out to be the beginning of a friendship that would end up one of the most rock solid and one of the most precious I have ever had.
Steve and Rhonda
Through almost 30 years of friendship Steve and I have watched each other grow up, grow down, act stupid, be daring, be afraid, fall in love, have our hearts broken, have children, pursue the spiritual, make mistakes and make successes. We’ve cried and thought and gotten drunk together. We have leaned on each other - sometimes lightly, sometimes heavily. We have laughed a lot - really a lot. Though many miles have separated us over the years, we have never lost touch. Our friendship is unique and wonderful - just like Steve.

I walked into the Bombay Bicycle Shop that night looking for the perfect band. I ended up finding the perfect friend. How lucky can one girl get?

Thank you, Mr. Steven Flynn. Happy Birthday. I look forward to 50 more years.

I love you.
