The Classes:
FAQ: What style of belly dance is Delilah? Delilah is one of those dancers where if you put the appropriate costume on her, play the right music, and she will find the style because she feels the music so deeply and as a dancer is so accessible. In her classes she has always used all styles of music and teaches movement vocabulary from all over the world. She has a thorough understanding of the bodies possibility for movement and has many ways of teaching the same principle. What she passes on like no other is the depth of commitment to the drama, spirit and art of the dance. She was schooled in the day of the 7 part cabaret club dance, often referred to as American Classic, but has made a name for herself by having a style uniquely Delilah. Her students are from all perspectives.
Thursday Evening, October 9th, 7:30 - 9:30 pm.
Dance Workshop # 1 - Fast Hips
In this workshop, well start with a fast hip and bun strengthening warm up. Then Delilah will demonstrate fast hip techniques using shimmying, layering and hip pattern overlays. We explore some new movements, and learn to spice up some old standards and most importantly, well learn to communicate and converse with our hips, using them to punctuate and create contrast in our over-all dance.

American veil techniques sometimes, called Veil by Braille!. Well do veil wraps, unwraps and veil unwinds. Well learn the comet, the framed turn, the windmill, the water wheel , the envelope, yashmak and the matador. We will work to cultivate the lyrical line of the body and follow it through, to this thin wing of fabric. In the last hour, well sneak in a short dance choreography called
Power Belly Dance full of undulations and belly rolls! - Bring a 3-Yard Veil

Lunch Break
Afternoon -Between A Musician and A Dancer
Delilah and Sirocco, 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Well begin our warm ups with slow arms and hands and torso undulations. Then on to an invigorating live music workout, where we will bring the vibration from inside the earth into our bodies, and let it roll out into slow moves. Well pick up speed and momentum, becoming more staccato until we run head long into a drum solo! Finally, well cool back down with a slow stretch with the ney and cymbulum and returning the energy back into the earth. Yes!
- Between A Musician and A Dancer Continued ,
Delilah and Sirocco, joined by music students 3:30-5:00)
In this portion of the workshop, we settle down into describing and demonstrating the roles of the performers. Well look at what should be included in a routine, how musicians and dancers bounce off each other during performance and how they can support each other and not distract from each other. Well look at what is intuitive and what is not intuitive; planned or crafted. We explore storytelling and how to let your face dance!

All students will receive a ney in the ney class made of PVC. (actually PVC makes a very good instrument to get started with. Alot of ney players prefer neys made of PVC now)

Music Workshop # 1 "Ring and Rhythm
We begin with an hour of finger cymbals (also known as zills) with Sulyman el Coyote, Middle Eastern musician extraordinaire. He will demonstrate rhythms and approaches to the intricacies of playing finger cymbals as a refined instrument. In addition, he will demonstrate a Turkish gypsy style of playing two different toned zills.
The next two hours will be spent with Uncle Mafufo learning the techniques of the Middle Eastern drum known as the doumbek. Open to students with various levels of experstise, Uncle Mafufo channels the experience of the student into the flow and nuance of steady mid east grove. During the class students can switch from drum to zills.

Music Workshop # 2 "Drum and the Open Spaces.
In the first hour we will be introduced to and explore the ney. The ney is one of the simplest and most soulful instruments known to man. Its simple body allows the breath to find its way into the heart. Each student will receive a tuned ney made of PVC and learn the various ways to blow life into the instrument. The rest of the class will be spent inappreciation of the instrument, and the path one travels in a life long pursuit of mastery.
For the next two hours, Uncle Mafufo will continue to work with the heartbeat of the music, the hypnotic cheftitelli rhythm We learn about leaving spaces open and filling them in, and listening for the tones in the beats. Watch the Master create soundscapes by playing less, not more.
