people. I'll save the details for my
book, but suffice it to say that this
experience happened in the north end
of the building. Twenty years later, I
would discover that this sanctuary was
a temple to Hathor - a goddess I
would portray in the 1997 German
production of Laurel Victoria Gray's
"Egypta."
At the time, I didn't even really under-
stand that the whole temple complex
we visited was built by a Queen
Hapshepsut, a queen more correctly
called "pharaoh." She is attributed by
many scholars as being perhaps one of
the most powerful women in history.
(Sorry New Agers, I do not think I was
Hapshepsut in a former life.)
What is strange as I take this retrospec-
tive glimpse back twenty years is that I
never questioned just why - way
back in 1975 and clearly dressed as a
female - I began performing a "Cane
Dance of the Ancient Pharaoh." I did
not think it strange or odd at all. It
seemed quite natural! Hmmmm?
