The Billion Belly Instructional DVD was created so dancers could learn the dance sequences for the Billion Belly March 2006. They could do this in their home town and come to Seattle in June and join us in our parade ensemble, knowing our dances inside out...

Turns out it worked great! Even the in-town dancers wanted a copy to work with at home. Beginners learned in fast order and danced with us with confidence.

We had about 20 dancers from around the country hear about it, sign up and to fly out to join us. That was not a lot of dancers and in the end only 8 made it from across the country. However, many more dancers taught their students in their town and sent their enthusiasm and support. They danced down their own side walks to celebrate the Summer Solstice Parade and the Billion Belly March as a testament to their personal pride of being a belly dancer!

Next year we hope to have many more dancers joining us from out of town. Read about all about the 2006 parade here and about previous parades in Alexandra’s library. Note the dances in next year’s Solstice Parade will be all together different, but this DVD is a very good tool for teachers and students alike who are interested in learning more about belly dance. In fact, it’s a good DVD to use with your weight belts, especially with the practice rhythm tracks.

What’s on it?

Main Menu:
Parade welcome / costume assignment
Saidi
Baladi & Masmoudi
Ayoob /Chaos Walk
Hagala
Chiftelli / Yin Yang
Rhythms for Practice: 5 looped drum tracks by Erik Brown.

It starts with a bit of direction for the parade 2006. If you are doing a parade in your own town or have been inspired by our parade project you will find it herstoric and exciting.

It’s dedicated to teaching, in detail, a couple steps for Saidi Rhythm that involve correct alignment, hip drops, arm and hand position, style and attitude. These steps were used by both main string and advanced string to back up Dahlia Moon’s cane dance routine. The Hagala is a familiar rhythm pattern from drum solos. It was one of the most exciting of our dances to see being done by over 100 women. The line baladi was a parade version of another dance Delilah has taught all over the world called circle baladi. This time the dance had a 4 part masmoudi break and kept moving down the street That means dancers had to learn it interchangeably for either side of the street - meaning charges in reverse. Great practice for left and right brain. The Ayoob is a trance rhythm. Since the parade was founded by wild pagans way back in the beginning, we called this dance part The Dionysian Chaos walk. Simple instruction and very free form. We used it to great advantage entering the parade in total planned chaos; looking like a swarm of red and yellow ants and then at the sound of a conch shell, zipping into beautiful order. The Chiftitelli is a beautiful feminine empowering arm and hand dance that has 7 majestic parts. Finally select from 5 looped drum tracks by Erik Brown. They are great for practicing and teaching with if you have a DVD player in your living room or studio.
